TMJ Disorder is a condition that can lead to discomfort and pain within the jaw and in the surrounding areas such as the face, head, ears, neck, and shoulders. The joints located at the back of the jaw are supported with blood vessels, bones, and nerves that all facilitate the various movements needed for speaking, smiling, laughing, chewing, and other functions.
Dysfunction within these vital joints may occur for a number of reasons. Interestingly, an exact cause has yet to be found. Some believe that existing dental work or ineffective orthodontia may create undue stress on these joints, prompting uncomfortable symptoms. Bruxism, or tooth grinding and clenching is also linked to TMJ disorder. The condition, overall, can be challenging because of this lack of understanding, and because people react differently to this joint problem. A wide range of symptoms can stem from TMJ dysfunction, and we pay careful attention to what our patients tell us during consultations to detect whether or not TMJ may be an accurate diagnosis.
TMJ disorder affects the neuromuscular system. We are very serious about the detection and proper treatment of this condition, focusing on the restoration of wellbeing through the elimination of inflammation and pain. We take a multi-faceted approach to treatment, incorporating various methods as needed for optimal outcome.
Treating TMJ disorder includes recreating optimal balance within the oral structures, including the muscles of the head, neck, and jaw. Dr. Chen uses her extensive experience and insight to devise treatment plans based on the severity of dysfunction and level of discomfort. In addition to designing a customized appliance, which is somewhat the standard therapy, ozone may be applied for the relief of symptoms.
The use of ozone for the treatment of TMJ disorder is safe and effective. Research has shown that this condition may be associated with fungi, viruses, and bacteria – all contaminants that ozone effectively kills. These microorganisms can cause inflammation in the mouth and body, resulting in discomfort. Injecting ozone into the TMJ kills these organisms, and also reduces inflammation and stimulates the growth of new cartilage.
